SAN DIEGO HEALTH PLANS

There are many San Diego health plans out on the market here in our county. In the individual market, PPO’s dominate because of the cost savings from the HMO’s. In the group market – PPO’s and HMO’s are pretty neck in neck as the cost is very similar.

These days – HSA’s are becoming more and more commonplace with the health plans in San Diego. An HSA is a health savings account - HSA’s are tax deductible accounts that can be used to pay for medical, dental, and vision costs. You pair this account with a High Deductible Health plan (HDHP). These plans are lower in cost than a traditional HMO and PPO, because medical costs are put into your hands. All medical costs go toward your deductible in an HSA compatible plan – and you do not have immediate copays on doctor’s office visits and prescription drugs. This in turn, makes you, as the consumer shop around for better pricing on medical services and prescription drugs.

Here in the office, all of us are on a HDHP plan and we love being able to use our tax-free HSA’s to pay for our medical costs. The savings in premium makes up for having to pay out of out of our pocket’s for our health plan and we can take more control of the costs we are paying out of pocket for different services. We are amazed at how an x-ray can cost twice as much at one lab compared to another. Also, we have begun switching out some of our brand name drugs for generics and saving a huge amount.
